A Life Marked by Music, Ministry, Miracles,

and the Unmistakable Hand of God

John Lanier’s story begins in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia - a city alive with Gospel heritage - where he was born into a home overflowing with music, faith, and Pentecostal fire. The oldest of four children, John didn’t simply grow up around Gospel music; he was formed by it. His parents sang in a local quartet before he was even born, and his mother’s singing, piano artistry, and songwriting brought Gospel legends through their lives like familiar friends: The Sego Brothers & Naomi, The Happy Goodmans, Wendy Bagwell & The Sunliters, The Hinsons, The Lanny Wolfe Trio, and more.

But John’s earliest and most defining memory wasn’t of a stage - it was of the fire.

By eight years old, John knew exactly what he wanted to be: a Gospel singer. Naomi Sego, with her unmistakable anointing, became the spark that ignited his calling. By twelve, he was leading worship with his parents, unknowingly stepping into the early training ground for a ministry that would one day reach across the nation and around the world.

FOUNDATIONS OF FIRE

John’s teenage years were shaped by the voices of spiritual giants. His father read Bible stories nightly, planting seeds of truth that would later become the backbone of his preaching. Jimmy Swaggart’s music and televised crusades became weekly appointments. - not entertainment, but impartation. “I recognized the anointing immediately,” John says. “It was unlike anything I’d ever heard.”

Other spiritual generals - David Wilkerson, B. H. Clendennen, B. R. Hicks - became mentors from afar, shaping his walk with Christ and echoing in his spirit even decades later.

After graduating high school in 1983, John stepped into broadcasting, first as a DJ at a small Christian station, then as a production assistant and eventually a popular radio personality at a larger station. But God was only warming up.

But after exactly two years, John faced a crossroads - his will or God’s will. He stepped away, not knowing what was next.

He didn’t have to wonder long.

For decades, John traveled the nation and the world, preaching and singing the Gospel with a passion that touched countless lives.

His songs - including fan favorites like Jerusalem and I Went Down a Beggar - climbed national charts. He earned multiple award nominations, won ‘Favorite Soloist’ in 2007, and later ‘Favorite Tenor’ during Tony Gore & Majesty’s Encore Tour.

He recorded 28 audio and video projects, appeared on two Gaither Homecoming videos, hosted the Millennium Tour of the Holy Land, and became a familiar face at Gospel Music FanFair and on the Victory Voyage Christian music cruises.

In 2006, he co‑founded Christian Voice Magazine, where he still serves as Executive Editor. In 2008, he hosted The John Lanier Show, a half‑hour variety program airing on multiple TV networks.

WHAT THE ENEMY MEANT FOR HARM

On July 4, 2019, John suffered a heart attack.

Three years later, a carotid endarterectomy - a surgery meant to prevent a stroke - resulted in vocal fold paralysis, leaving him unable to sing or preach. “Although it seems my voice is slowly coming back, I haven’t been able to sing or preach since that surgery,” he shares.

More health battles followed: multiple surgeries, hospital stays, and finally triple bypass surgery in February 2024.

But God wasn’t finished.

By 2025, John began to rise again.

“In a sense, I feel like I’ve been resurrected,” he says. “Everything I’ve endured has given me a new outlook and a powerful testimony.”

And then came the revelation: God didn’t take away his voice - He redirected it.

THE WATCHMAN’S VOICE - A NEW CALLING

In October 2025, John launched The Watchman’s Voice, a prophetic editorial platform created to “sound the alarm in a generation lulled by compromise and confusion.”

It is bold.

It is biblical.

It is unafraid.

What began as a single article titled ‘Wolves Among Us’ grew into a series… and then into a book.

John’s long‑held desire to write finally came alive.

His new book, “Seducing Spirits and Doctrines of Devils: Wolves Among Us,” is a hard‑hitting, uncompromising look at deception in the modern church. “It’s not for the easily offended,” he says - and he means it.

A NEW SEASON - AND A NEW SOUND

Now, more than 40 years after he first stepped into Gospel music and evangelism, John Lanier is stepping into a new chapter - one marked by clarity, purpose, and renewed strength.

At 60 years old, he shows no signs of slowing down. More than ever before, John desires your prayers and support in this new season of his life and ministry.

Through his new website at johnlanier.com, The Watchman’s Voice (watchmansvoice.net), his books, and his ongoing connection with supporters, John Lanier is still proclaiming a crucified and resurrected Christ - with a voice God Himself has reshaped for this season.

He recalls a moment at just two years old, a Sunday night service as the Hammond organ roared and the sanctuary erupted in Spirit‑filled worship. His grandmother, overcome by the power of God, accidentally slung him into the aisle as she shouted under the anointing.

“I didn’t cry. I wasn’t scared,” John remembers. “I just sat there in awe, looking up at my grandmother trembling under the power of Almighty God.”

It’s a memory that still brings him to tears - a moment God burned into his spirit before he could even speak in full sentences.

THE DREAM THAT CAME TRUE

In 1989, at just 23 years old, John stepped onto the tour coach of the group that had shaped his childhood: Naomi & The Segos. “It was the thrill of my life,” he says. “God gave me the desires of my heart - and He did it with the very group I fell in love with as a child.”

For several years, John stood beside the legendary Naomi Sego, night after night, singing the Gospel with the group that had first stirred his calling.

TONY GORE & MAJESTY - A GOSPEL POWERHOUSE

When John joined Tony Gore and Calvin Thornton to form Tony Gore & Majesty, the response was explosive. Their debut concert in Murfreesboro, Tennessee launched a whirlwind season of sold‑out venues, standing‑room‑only churches, and revival‑like concerts that felt more like old‑fashioned camp meetings.

“We could hardly keep up,” John recalls. “The bus was our home for weeks at a time. God blessed us beyond anything we could have imagined.”

THE CALL TO PREACH

By late 1996, after a series of unmistakable God‑orchestrated events, John found himself back on the road - this time as a soloist and evangelist.

“I NEVER wanted to be a soloist. I NEVER imagined myself as a preacher,” he says. “But God was doing a new work in me. I realized I wasn’t just living a childhood dream - I was called, appointed, and anointed to walk in HIS will.”

In 2015, he helped launch Gabriel Swaggart’s national rallies, serving as Chairman of the inaugural Birmingham event and remaining involved for four years.

In 2018, he launched Christian Voice Radio, a 24/7 streaming station featuring music, preaching, talk shows, and radio theatre.

John’s ministry was thriving.

And then came the storm.
